Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios, known for his controversial reputation, has made his debut in television commentary. However, his initial foray into this new career path was marked by a less-than-successful attempt at humour. During the commentary, Kyrgios also expressed his eagerness to return to competitive play, emphasising his strong desire to get back on the court.

Kyrgios’ 2023 tennis season has been limited to just one match due to knee surgery, which forced him to miss the Australian Open. Subsequently, a wrist injury further disrupted his plans for a comeback at Wimbledon and participation in the US Open. Despite these setbacks, the 28-year-old found an opportunity to stay involved in the tennis scene by securing a commentary role for the World Tour Finals in Turin. Recently, he took on the role in the commentary booth during the round-robin match featuring Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.

When asked what he was doing in LA, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist replied: ‘I was getting a coffee and saw you guys. You had a spare suit, a spare microphone, and here I am.’

He further added, ‘Every day, doing the rehab, doing the gym work, but to be here, to be able to watch the match we’re about to watch … I’m really looking forward to breaking it down for everyone out there.’

The ATP Finals see the world’s top eight players face off in a round robin format to crown the best player of the season – and Kyrgios believes he’s uniquely qualified to commentate.

‘I love watching tennis. I feel like I’m a bit of a student of a game,’ Kyrgios said.

Daniil Medvedev has contradicted Stefanos Tsitsipas’ assertive claim that he views the ATP Finals as “bigger than a Grand Slam” in anticipation of the 2023 edition of the tournament.

The third-ranked player in the world acknowledged the exceptional competitiveness of the field in the year-end championships. However, he contended that the challenging seven-round, best-of-five set format in Grand Slam events makes securing victories in those tournaments more demanding.

In 2019, Tsitsipas triumphed over Dominic Thiem in the ATP Finals’ final, clinching the title in his debut appearance and having previously defeated Roger Federer in the semi-finals. Despite this initial success, the 25-year-old has not progressed beyond the round-robin stage in his three subsequent appearances, including a withdrawal due to injury after one match in 2021.

Although Tsitsipas has yet to secure a Grand Slam title, he reached the runner-up position at the 2021 French Open and this year’s Australian Open, losing to Novak Djokovic on both occasions.

Speaking ahead of his fifth ATP Finals appearance, Tsitsipas made the controversial claim that he places the season-ending event above the four Grand Slams.

“It’s a whole celebration. The ATP Finals is a commemoration and celebration of the best of the best in our sport. We all gather together and we get to play against each other and focus on the fact that we are the best in the world trying to fight for this mega trophy, which is a grand prize in our sport,” said the Greek.

“It means a lot. I would consider it probably a bigger thing than a Slam, honestly. It has big prestige and it’s a very valuable asset if you’re able to conquer and win it.”

Djokovic had an open training session last week and then held a press conference, where he revealed he had applied for a special permit. “Everything is currently in the process. I have a big desire to be there. I am really thankful to the Indian Wells and Miami tournament (officials) and community for their support publicly and they would like me to be able to play in their tournaments”, he said.

The Serbian began this season with his 92nd career title at the 2023 Adelaide International 1. At the Australian Open, he dropped only one set en route to the final, where he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets to clinch his record-extending 10th Australian Open title.

He also tied Rafael Nadal for the Open Era record of 22 men’s singles major title, and also snatched the world no. 1 ranking from Carlos Alcaraz.

Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic believes he will never forget the controversial turn of events that led to him being deported from the Australian Open 2022. The controversy surrounding COVID-19 vaccinations was the most trending topic in global tennis last year, and Djokovic will have a hard time forgetting it.

The former world number 1 is currently in Australia for the Grand Slam this year and hopes things go smoothly this time around.

“You can’t forget those events, it’s one of those things that stick with you,” said Djokovic in his first news conference since returning to Australia.

“It stays with you for the rest of your life. It’s something I’ve never experienced before and hopefully never again, but it is a valuable life experience for me.

“But I have to move on and coming back to Australia speaks about how I feel about this country and how I feel about playing here.”

“It’s a great place and the people in Adelaide, and generally in Australia, love tennis, love sports and it’s a sporting nation so hopefully we’re going to have a lot of people watching and we can have a good time,” Djokovic said.

“I’m hoping everything is going to be positive. Obviously, it’s not something that I can predict. I’ll do my best to play some good tennis and bring good emotions and good feelings to the crowd.”

Djokovic is motivated for the coming year and specifically the Australian Open for its highly competitive environment.

French tennis ace Rafael Nadal has agreed with Novak Djokovic that their French Open Quarter-final clash started too late.

“It is too late, without a doubt,” said Nadal. He had requested not to go ahead with the evening session.

“I can’t complain because we have two days off now but if you only have one day off, or like [Alexander] Zverev had in Madrid when he had to play the final the next day, then it’s a big issue.”

“I understand the other part of the business, without a doubt, that television pays a lot of money. We need to find a balance.”

Djokovic believed the same as he appreciate the grace of Nadal’s tennis in the tough moments of the game.

“I think they are starting too late. But TV decides, that’s the world we live in,” said Djokovic.

“He was just able to take his tennis to another level in those particular moments in the beginning of all sets, except the fourth…”

“I had my chances but he showed why he’s a great champion, staying mentally tough… he deserved it.”

Rafael Nadal now inches closer to winning this year’s French Open. Only time will tell whether the King of Clay gets his hands on the trophy.

Controversial Serbian tennis star has hit out at BBC for a public tell-all interview he did with them after his ordeal at the Australian Open. The Serbian tennis star was the topic of all discussions after he was refused entry into Australia due to his inability to get vaccinated in time.

While Djokovic held his tongue during the course of the tournament, he later went towards BBC and gave a tell-all interview that included all details.

However, the Serb star is now angry at BBC for the way they reported the interview and for the way they misinformed the public through their inadequate reporting measures.

“I was painted in a really ugly manner,” he told the Sport Klub, “I was humiliated, if I may say so, on a world stage.

“That is why it is important for me to have the opportunity to say something. I will repeat what I said to the BBC, because I don’t have more to add.

“I’ve done everything that was asked of me.

“There is a belief that I was privileged in a way, that I [got the exemption] because of my stature.

“I will keep saying it and repeat it like a parrot, although the BBC has cut that part of the interview: 10 days before me, a Czech tennis player and Croatian coach entered Australia with the same medical exemption.

“She played a tournament, he coached his player no problem at all. Suddenly I come and there is a problem. Why? You tell me.”

The 34-year-old Serb star is still to get a nod by organizers to play in the French Open. However, he will play in Rome to get back into competitive action. With Nadal leading the competition, Djokovic would like to get back in competitive action and be back in winning ways.

With the controversy surrounding Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, pundits and fans had hoped that things could settle down and improve. However, there was another controversy as well, which led to fines on both Medvedev and Tsitsipas during the semifinal.

Daniil Medvedev, who went on to lose to Rafa Nadal in the final, had accused Stefanos Tsitsipas’s father of coaching him from the seats. Medvedev then apparently lost it at the umpire’s inaction and went on to hurl obscenities at him.

“Are you mad? Are you mad?” Medvedev screamed at Campistol during the second set of his 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win on Rod Laver Arena.

“His father can coach every point? Are you stupid? His father can talk every point? His father can talk every point?

“Answer my question. Will you answer my question?”

Medvedev continued: “Oh my God, you are so bad, man. How can you be so bad in semifinal? Look at me. I’m talking to you.”

Medvedev later went on to mention that he regretted his action. The apology, however, wasn’t enough to save him from a $17,000 fine.

“Before every return his [Tsitsipas’s father] was talking Greek,” Medvedev told his media conference.

“I don’t know, maybe [if] he’s saying, ‘Come on, come on’, there is no problem.

“I asked him [Campistol] if he [Tsitsipas’s father] can talk. He said he can talk but he can’t coach.

“Then I said, ‘Do you speak Greek? If not, the guy is talking, talking, talking’. I don’t know what he says.

“I don’t consider coaching as cheating but it should be a code violation.”

Tsitsipas, on the contrary, said he couldn’t hear anything and was appalled at Medvedev’s behavior.

“I cannot hear anything when I’m playing. It’s impossible. Having the crowd being so loud in every single point, you have to have super hearing to be able to hear what your coach says,” said Tsitsipas.

Prominent tennis star and Ukrainian pro, Elina Svitolina, has backflipped on her initial stance on vaccines to ensure that she is up for a booster dose. 15th ranked Svitolina was against booster dose’s earlier and has backtracked on that to reveal that she was vaccinated earlier in 2021 and is all willing to get a booster dose.

“Even if they tell me that I have to get a third shot, I would be happy to do that, because I see now so many new cases – and lots of players,” Svitolina told News Corp.

“Lots of our friends are getting Covid, so it’s quite tough right now.”

Svitolana said she was also happy with the initial response from players and can’t wait for the season to get started.

“It’s amazing to see so many good players signing to play from the beginning of the season,” she said.

“Everyone’s trying to be ready for the first (grand slam) tournament, for Melbourne, so it’s a really good field and it’s going to be really tough from the beginning of the tournament. There’s no time for adjustments – you have to be ready from the first round, mentally, physically, so this is very exciting, I think, for the tournament and for players as well.”

Svitolina recently got married to men world No.6 Gael Monfils in a close private ceremony. Both the stars plan to be in Australia during the year’s first Grand Slam and will be fighting for laurels after their rushed wedding.

“It was a very special moment for me and Gael,” Svitolina said.

“That month was very busy, for both of us. We had our wedding and the next day we had to fly to Tokyo straightaway, so no big celebrations, but in the end it was very special. We shared this moment with our family and our close friends. It was a really small wedding and it was super special … definitely this moment will last forever in our memories.”

After a month of deafening silence, the foreign ministry in China has finally opened up and has revealed that the case surrounding tennis ace Peng Shuai was maliciously hyped up by external state actors.

Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai disappeared from the public eye after she made allegations of sexual assault against the former vice premier of the People Republic of China. Peng Shuai was gone for almost 3 weeks, after she made an appearance back on social media.

“Even if it’s just striking a stone with a pebble, or a moth attacking a flame and courting self destruction, I will tell the truth about you,” Peng Shuai had written in an article highlighting the abuse.

WTA Chairman Steve Simon stepped into the matter and called for authentic reports. “Her accusation about the conduct of a former Chinese leader involving a sexual assault must be treated with the utmost seriousness,” Simon said in the statement. “In all societies, the behavior she alleges that took place needs to be investigated, not condoned or ignored.”

However, now that Peng Shuai has made a return to the public eye, Chinese experts believe that the problem was maliciously highlighted by external state actors. “I believe you have all seen that she recently attended some public events and had a video call [with the president of the International Olympic Committee],” spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters.

“I think some people should stop deliberately and maliciously hyping [the issue] up, let alone politicise this issue,” he said.

Peng Shuai had a meeting with the head of the International Olympic Committee over the last weekend, with the head of the group saying she looked safe and appeared well. However, concerns over Ms Peng’s safety and wellbeing still persist among global circles. As per the WTA the recent videos “don’t alleviate or address… concern about her wellbeing and ability to communicate without censorship or coercion”.
