Kyrgios’ 2023 tennis season has been limited to just one match due to knee surgery, which forced him to miss the Australian Open. Subsequently, a wrist injury further disrupted his plans for a comeback at Wimbledon and participation in the US Open. Despite these setbacks, the 28-year-old found an opportunity to stay involved in the tennis scene by securing a commentary role for the World Tour Finals in Turin. Recently, he took on the role in the commentary booth during the round-robin match featuring Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.

When asked what he was doing in LA, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist replied: ‘I was getting a coffee and saw you guys. You had a spare suit, a spare microphone, and here I am.’

He further added, ‘Every day, doing the rehab, doing the gym work, but to be here, to be able to watch the match we’re about to watch … I’m really looking forward to breaking it down for everyone out there.’

The ATP Finals see the world’s top eight players face off in a round robin format to crown the best player of the season – and Kyrgios believes he’s uniquely qualified to commentate.

‘I love watching tennis. I feel like I’m a bit of a student of a game,’ Kyrgios said.

It was when the set was tied at 4-4 when Opelka proceeded to the net and touched it with his racket. Kyrgios eventually lost the point and went on to unload his anger on the umpire. “What are you watching? I saw his foot touch the net, and you’re not going to call it,” Kyrgios said to the umpire.

“What else could you be watching, bro? I can see his foot touch the net from where I am, and you don’t call anything. It’s a joke, bro. It cost me the f—ing set. Bulls—.”

Opelka then went on to win the match, pushing Kyrgios to his third defeat on the trot. 

Earlier, Nick Kyrgios had a moment of truth during a recent press conference. Talking about his failing competitive edge, Kyrgios went on to say: 

“I’m not feeling the severity of certain points, and I don’t feel the pressure as much as obviously playing week in, week out,” said Kyrgios.

“You feel when you kind of have to press, when you kind of have to relax, when you kind of coast, when you kind of push.

“I don’t really feel like my body and my mind quite understand the severity of some points here or there because I haven’t played that much.

“Look, I’m disappointed. I’m disappointed.

“I know that I’m going to be dealing with a lot of s**t now on social media. Like, my head’s in the shed, to be honest.

“I don’t know; I didn’t play great.”

“Hey guys – I just want to let you know that I’ve decided to withdraw from the Olympics,” Kyrgios said on Twitter.

“It’s a decision I didn’t make lightly. It’s been my dream to represent Australia at the Olympics and I know I may never get that opportunity again.”

The maverick cited his recent injury trouble and the lack of fans as his two main reasons for deciding not to participate in Japan.

“I know myself. The thought of playing in front of empty stadiums just doesn’t sit right with me. It never has,” Kyrgios continued.

“I also wouldn’t want to take an opportunity away from a healthy Aussie athlete ready to represent the country.

“I will also take all the time I need to get my body right. Good luck to all the Aussies competing and I’ll see you back on the court real soon.”

Earlier, Nick Kyrgios has said that he definitely does not love the sport as much as some of the legends do. “I definitely don’t love this sport as those legends do,” Krygios admitted in a post-match interview at Wimbledon. 

“Like, I feel like Federer, Nadal and Novak Djokovic wouldn’t be able to live without tennis. I feel like that’s their first love.

“For me, my first love was basketball and I wasn’t able to chase that dream, so definitely, I don’t wake up every day having that coming so easily, like wanting to get better.”

I’m not saying I’m going to retire any time soon, I’m just saying I feel as if I’ve been on tour for a long time,” he added.

“There are a lot of things I want to do outside of tennis,” the tennis star went on to say.

The tennis star has maintained his controversial demeanor and style on the internet during the current pandemic and hasn’t shied away from throwing jibes at fellow stars. 

Nick Kyrgios is once again making waves on social media after a rant at people comparing him to fellow Australian Bernard Tomic.

The 26-year-old has been a controversial figure on social media throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and he wasn’t reluctant to air his views once again after the perceived slight.

“I got compared with Bernard Tomic today and I’ve never felt more insulted,” Kyrgios wrote.

“Does he have a foundation? Does he have the accomplishments? Did he raise money for the bushfires? It’s disgusting, man.

“Do your research. Oh and by accomplishments I mean beating the big 4 [in reference to wins over Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic].”

The tennis star has also confirmed his presence in the ATP Mallorca Championships at the Calvia Country Club from June 19-26. Nick’s presence in the tournament was confirmed by tournament organizer Toni Nadal in a recent interview. 

Nadal went on to speak about the importance of players like Kyrgios in the tournament and how they increase viewership. 

“He is well-known all around the world, and he guarantees a spectacle,” Nadal said.

“Let’s hope he meets [Mallorcan] Jaume [Munar] in the final.”

In more news, tennis legend Rod Laver has called for Nick Kyrgios to be suspended from the ATP tour on the basis of the consistently bad behavior he has displayed. The 26-year-old Kyrgios has, on multiple occasions, shown signs of outburst during games and set a very poor example for kids watching the game. 

“Whatever they have done hasn’t worked so far, so maybe a suspension is the only answer,” Rod Laver told The Sydney Morning Herald in a recent interview.

“I’m not sure he’s learned anything from any of the things that have gone on.”

“Nick is Nick, unfortunately,” Laver said. “He could have been, or still could become, a world champion because of his serving ability, his game.

Nick Kyrgios, who comes from Australia, has opened up about his battle with depression and has admitted to being in a dark and lonely place during his recent battles as he went through the relentless grind and pressure of tennis tours. 

Kyrgios has been part of a number of temperamental and aggressive reactions on courts. These reactions include expletive meltdowns, explosive racquet smashing on the court and other arguments with on-field personnel and the crowd. The ATP even put Kyrgios on probation and asked him to seek professional help for his issues. 

“I don’t think people understand how lonely tennis can be,” Kyrgios told Sydney’s Sunday Telegraph magazine.

“You’re out there on the court on your own. You can’t really talk to anyone. You have to figure things out for yourself. I did struggle with that.”

Kyrgios says he always remembers himself as an emotional individual, and does not like spending long periods away from his family home in Canberra. He also mentioned there were times when he was seriously and clinically depressed. 

“I remember waking up in Shanghai one year and it was 4pm and I was still in bed, curtains closed. I didn’t want to see the light of day,” he said.

“I felt like no one wanted to know me as a person, they just wanted to get a hold of me as a tennis player and use me. I didn’t feel like I could trust anyone. It was a lonely, dark place. And things came from that.”

“A lot of people were putting pressure on me, I put a lot of pressure on myself. I just lost joy for the game and I was spiraling out of control,” he added.

“I fell into depression because of the things I thought I had to be.”

The 25-year-old has done some damage control on his falling reputation by assisting fundraising efforts for deadly bushfires in Australia last summer and also adding a voice of reason during the coronavirus pandemic. 

“Nothing beats playing in some of the best parts of the world against tough opponents and doing all the work off the court to have success. I’m definitely missing it. But I don’t live and breathe tennis,” he said.

“I love being at home with my family and my girlfriend, and working with my foundation (for underprivileged children) and helping the community. There are plenty of other things I love doing,” he concluded.

23-year-old Medvedev recently arrived to Shanghai for the ATP Masters and had a Q&A session on Instagram, where fans asked him multiple questions about his future plans. The session was held for followers so that they could learn a bit more about the life of the tennis prodigy and how he handles his other activities.

While the first few questions were about the personal life of Medvedev, including his family, fans soon started asking professional questions. One of the fans asked Medvedev “When will you play doubles with Kyrgios?”

Medvedev saw a good offer in the question and tagged Kyrgios in the post asking “Any doubles maybe?”

Medvedev has been in hot form off late and is currently the world’s fourth ranked player. His success has been hidden from none, and many supporters of the game have been positively influenced by his success.

While Medvedev previously had the reputation of a ‘bad boy’ he’s surely changing it for the better and wants to be known as a professional and not as a bad boy.

The team up of Kyrgios with Medvedev has already got tennis fans fantasizing about the prospects that could come. Both players have quite a reputation for verbal attacks on the court and it will quite an act seeing them battle it out on the same side of the court.

Kyrgios was serving at 2-1 when the crowd rattled him with taunts. Kyrgios, who is known to be on his heels in the court, lost all patience and furiously slammed his racket on the court while hurling abuse.

Earlier in the tournament, playing against Slovak Norbert Gombos, Krygios went to a female in the court and asked her, “Where do you want me to go with this serve?” 

The suggestion did work for Kyrgios as he went on to get an ace on that particular serve. Kyrgios thanked his supporter at the end of the match and went on to embrace her. He then went on to mention this in his after match press conference, “I’m just super happy that all the work I’m doing off the court is translating onto the court. Four days in a row, four matches competing at my highest level; I’m pretty happy with in honestly. The crowd’s been amazing. I love playing night matches here. The crowd’s hanging around for late night matches and getting into it, and I’m just trying to give them fun tennis to watch, and also trying to get some wins as well.”

Kyrgios is certainly new and unique to the sport of tennis. We have seen many stars pass around, but it is good to have someone bring back that swagger that was absent from the courts for a long time. 

Britain’s Andy Murray recently mentioned why Nick Kyrgios is necessary and perfect for the sport. “When he’s mentally engaged in the matches, he’s brilliant for tennis because he has an exciting game, a big personality and he’s different,” mentioned Murray while speaking to the official ATP website.

“His match with Rafa [Nadal] at Wimbledon was one of the best matches of the tournament. That’s really good for tennis. As someone who knows him well, I like him. I just want to see him do that all of the time,” added Murray. 

Murray however was quick to mention that there was a fine line between being competitive and being offensive towards others, and that all players should be looking to follow it. 

“Everyone matures at different ages. Some people are ready when they are 18, 19 to deal with what comes with being a top athlete and some people aren’t ready and it takes them a bit of time. I’m hoping that with time Nick will learn and be better for it. When he’s engaged in tennis and wants to play he’s brilliant for the game. And when he isn’t giving his best effort and misbehaving, that’s not what people want to see. He needs to find that balance.”

Kyrgios has himself mentioned that he has come a long way during the past few months, and has more command on his anger than before. 

In a recent conference, Kyrgios said: “It’s amazing. Where I was six months ago, some of the things I was doing, to respond like this having incredible support, it’s amazing. I’ve proved to myself and a lot of people that have backed me that I still have it. It’s been one of the best weeks of my life from a tennis perspective.”

While there is still uncertainty over the path Kyrgios’s career takes in the future, what we do know is that he is destined to achieve a lot more for himself and for the sport.

The 21-year old was giving it his all while trying to overturn the match. He was a set behind and was on the brink of his next serve when he snapped at a fan for ruining his focus. Politely telling the spectator to “shut the f* up” is not the best way to silence the fans.

Well, at least he did come to overturn the potential defeat into a win and saved himself from further embarrassment. To add more spice, Nick—after winning the match—mockingly started waving at a bunch that kept muttering one thing after the other during the match. The vocal supporters of Nick’s opponent Sela did not have much to boast about then.

Nick Kyrgios always brings a bit of drama to his matches. In fact, he even stretches the drama to post-match Twitter duels. When the insulted spectators demanded an apology from Nick on Twitter, “LOL, man up” was his reply!
